The meaning of “S.M.A.R.T” in goal setting


A goal set to accomplish a purpose must have feasible characteristics. One set of those characteristics is that a goal must be SMART. The acronym SMART was propounded by George T. Doran in his article entitled “There is a S.M.A.R.T way to write management goals and objectives” as appeared in the November 1981 issue of Management Review.

Varieties of books, blogs, websites and other posts gave their views about the meanings of the letters of the acronym. However, the 1981 edition of the acronym stood for S- Specific, M- Measurable, A- Assignable, R- Realistic, T- Time based. In the current edition of the SMART acronym, one is likely to find key words are suggested by Smart project (http:/ as outlined as follows;

  • “S- Specific, Significant, Stretching
  • M- Measurable, Meaningful, Motivational
  • A- Agreed upon, Action, Achievable
  • R- Realistic, Relevant, Reasonable, Rewarding, Result-oriented
  • T- Time-based, Timely, Tangible, Track-able”

What then does a person need to do with those five key words above as far as goal setting is concerned?

Your goals must be clearly defined, touching a task fulfillment and can be understood by everyone

You must know how your goal will, be said to be completed; thus the parameters for identifying an accomplished goal, how much of it will be accomplished and at which time?

Also means “achievable” and this figures out that the goal can be established to fulfill the dream in focus. There are some goals that are not attainable owing to what it’s going to fulfill.

The goal must be real. It must represent a way out into reaching a dream and a way in which you are willing to work.

A goal is said to be time-based if it has been woven around a time-frame or a deadline. Every single day can serve as a little improvement on a set dream through a well set goal.

What is a goal?


A goal is the “end result or achievement in which effort is directed” (

It can also be defined as “a desired result an animal or a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve- a personal or organizational desired end-point in some sort of assumed development” (

A goal in my view after comparing the above terms and many more references revealed that a goal must have the following and many other features. A goal must be;

  1. Directed towards a dream: A goal cannot exist independent of a vision or a purpose or a dream. A dream is just a fantasy or a desired end. Goals are steps taken to reach that fantasized end.
  2. Designed with a deadline: Every goal must have a time to “die”; thus a time to be accomplished. This deadline is the main reason why “Time bound” is found in the SMART tool used for constructing goal.
  3. Divided into two main types; short term and long term goals: Short term goals are those set to be completed with a short time, for instance within less than one year. Long term goals are those set to be completed within a long time interval, for instance more the three years.

The following words have been researched and accepted to represent the ideologies behind the term ‘goal setting’; “objectives, aims, intensions, deadline, purpose, strategies, vision, planning, preparation and dreams”.

Without a goal, a person will either remain a dreamer till he dies or he will attempt to fulfill a purpose in an unplanned way which may equally yield what happens to the former.

Goal Setting; Seven (7) tips to know


What is your goal in life? Have you ever asked yourself that question? Or has somebody ever caught you by surprise with it? Unfortunately, a lot of people today have lose the art of goal setting. They live out each day as it passes, with no definite finish line aheaOthers have a vague idea of becoming successful in the future, but that’s about it. I’ve heard many people say that they want a house of their own. While such goals are inspiring to achieve, they’re too broad and are more likely to remain dreams than reality. What use is a goal when you‘re far likely from reaching it?

That is where effective tips for goal setting come in. These tips spell the difference between dreams and reality. If you’re ready to start checking off items from your goals list, read on!

1. Set achievable goals.

One of the most important tips for goal setting is to set achievable goals. Do not set a goal of earning a hundred thousand dollars by the end of the month if you’re barely making a thousand dollars monthly. Those kinds of “big jump” goals are bordering on wishful thinking and are a lot more difficult to realize.

Yes, it’s important to dream big and never let go of the ultimate prize; but you should do it gradually – to make it more believable and attainable.

Using the same example above, you could set up a goal of earning two thousand dollars by the end of the month. After you have achieved that aim, your next goal is to make three thousand dollars, and so on. Ultimately, you could reach the point where you could set a goal of earning a hundred thousand dollars by month end… but not until you’ve passed through several levels of escalating goals.

2. It’s all in the details.

The more detailed your goal is, the more effective it becomes. By being very specific and putting a lot of effort into creating a goal, you are already halfway done with the job. Your mind has already mapped out the outcome of your goal. That alone helps you a lot.

For example, instead of writing down that you want to have a nice job after graduation, write down that you want to become a member of your favorite magazine’s editorial team. It instructs your subconscious mind to focus on something more concrete, gives you something more to hope for, and energizes you to achieve your goal.

3. Allow for flexibility.

If there is really no way you can meet your goal, don’t stop yourself from tweaking it a bit.

If your goal is to move out of your parents’ home in two years, and you still haven’t been able to do it after all your efforts, you can always stretch that deadline for a few days, weeks, or months.

This allows you some leeway and still keeps you dedicated to moving into your own home one day. Don’t keep changing the deadline though, because then you’ll never be able to cross that item off your list.

Here’s the point I’m trying to emphasize: You should be dedicated to achieve any goal within a certain period, but you should never give up in case something went wrong. The important thing is that you did your best to achieve it, and that you’re flexible enough to know when you should alter your original plans.

4. Treat yourself after achieving every goal.

It’s important that you reward yourself for a job well done. If your goal is to finish writing that article, you can promise yourself a nice bowl of ice cream after as a treat.

This motivates you to do your best to achieve your goal. This reward system works quite well for goals that are a little less fun to fulfill.

5. Keep things positive.

When writing down your goals, try to keep your words as positive as possible. In fact, you can do this with tip number four. You can write down, “Pass the exam and go celebrate at the best restaurant in town.”

That’s definitely more effective than writing down, “Pass the exam or else mom will take the laptop away.”

6. Stay committed to your goals.

Don’t go about setting goals and then dropping them to the side once the going gets tough. Goals aren’t always easy to achieve. They may require time, hard work and even sacrifice.

If you’re scared of a little hard work, then you’ll only be setting yourself up for failure. Giving up on one goal too quickly also weakens your chance of completing even one goal on your list. Stay committed to your goal unless it’s more practical to change course.

7. Make sure your goals all agree.

Don’t set goals that might pose a conflict for another goal. A lot of people don’t really notice how contradicting some of their goals can be. Look at your goals list, read it more carefully, and take note of any goals that might hinder another goal’s success.

For example, your dream of becoming a champion sumo wrestler would offset a goal of having 6-pack abs. (Ok, this is extreme, but you get the drift.)

Goal setting need not be a waste of time. As long as you stay realistic, committed and positive, I see no reason why you can’t achieve your goals. So do things the right way and you won’t have to worry about setting yourself up for failure.

  4. Create a positive mind set that your goal has already been achieved and snap a mind picture of how the success is and how it is being celebrated.
  5. Be aware of opportunities that provide you with the tools to reshape your dreams. Make good use of those opportunities.
  6. Utilize your confidence, courage, creativity, commitment and conscience to stay in focus in times of difficulties.
  7. In time of failure, gather yourself and try again. Failure is an opportunity to let you know that you must try again, but this time round using an alternate approach.
  8. Silence is gold, speech is silver. Go for the gold, not silver. Stop talking too much about your goals. Get into the game and score them.
  9. Listen to advice and counsel from great achievers, avoid those who belittle your ambitions. Stand on the shoulders of giants and you will see farther than them.
  10. Set and observe deadlines. Work out to meet deadlines. Work exceptionally to leave on earth an IMPACT.

Leadership is a state comprising a mixture of knowledge, values, attitude, skills and behaviour used to manage a disposition or a situation. Depending on the management level of the individual in the said state, we could have successful leaders and unsuccessful leaders respectively.

In one way or the other, I may say everyone is a leader because situations do crop up in our lives day in day out and we apply some of these leadership skills to solve them carefully unawares. It therefore means that you must not be voted into power or appointed to manage a firm before you are called a leader. Everyone mindful of creating a family through marriage needs leadership qualities to rule his or her home and this. To do this, one must start branding him or herself each and every moment so as not to be taken by surprise or found wanted when situations arise and they need to intervene skillfully.
The following and some other more are the top qualities that make you a perfect leader;

To be loyal means to show consistency and firmness in one’s support for a person, organization, country or anywhere applicable. The quality in loyalty is that, it makes you serve with kindheartedness. Loyalty creates rooms for acceptance, good personal relationship and self-respect, all which are needed in leadership. Inconsistency in leadership is a very bad attitude and can lead to repeated failure.
 To excel means to be very good at something, performing exceptionally well there. Excellent people make efforts to attain the peak of their pursuits through what they know, think about and do. Mediocrity on the other side is to accept the average as the ultimate. Leadership position in a group demands a division of labour. For instance, at a firm, we have someone as a porter, another person entrusted with publicity issue, someone also concerned about administration, etc. Excellence in that state therefore means that you can do very well at the very post you find yourself and you can do better than anyone who might step in that shoe. A good leader does best where he finds him/herself.

To be assertive means to be confident and passionate. The role of assertiveness in role performance is that it the leader face difficult situations with courage. In quest of managing multiple priorities, an assertive leader delegates effectively and supervises perfectly. Melancholy has no room in the mansions of a leader endowed with assertiveness. A leader with this quality can fail though because of risk taking, but through failure, he learns from mistakes and this contributes to the resultant excellence.
A person is said to be dedicated when he devotes him/herself to a particular task, subject or goal to fulfill a purpose. Dedication and loyalty go hand-in-hand; loyalty provides the platform where dedication demonstrates. A committed leader invests time, money and talent into what becomes a success as last. In the presence of dedication, it is very difficult to give up. Giving up is an indication of defeat, and winners are normal people who have not been defeated at last. Personal dedication takes its source from the love for work and the purpose being pursued.
To be an example is to create and show a pattern of what you expect another person to show or create. All leader are models and every model is expected to teach through action, behaviour and speech. A leader must therefore have the quality of being first what he wanted his followers to be. There is no need being a pretender or a hypocrite in leadership. A good father teaches his children through his actions and likewise a good mother because every little step taken by these models would surely surface in the children. A good leader thus does what he preaches.

 Every step we take brings us a consequence, whether desirable or unwanted. The whole scenario is like cultivation where every seed yields a fruit of its own species. A good leader must be fully aware of this: – this is knowledge. Wisdom which is another premier quality comes into play when the leader applies this knowledge to prepare, plan, promote and pursue projects that will lead to the fulfillment of purposeful results. A result-conscious leader is focused on an outcome and generates skills to let this happen. If it will be by delegation or in terms of resources management to meet expected goals, he does it perfectly. A result-conscious leader does not sit down in order to celebrate a success that is expected to arrive by chance.
